Knowing that being an adoptee, birth parent, or adoptive parent can be a very isolating and frequently misunderstood life experience, Marie leads adoption support groups for adoption triad members. Being in a group of individuals with similar experiences helps individuals have a safe place to discuss the core issues of adoption, trauma, and complex relationships. With these shared experiences, relationships can be experienced in a new way, and healing can occur in a manner that is different from individual therapy. Common topics of adoption support groups include: adoption search and reunion, relinquishment trauma, education on adoption issues, and, insensitive adoption comments.
At this time, the only active group is the adult adoptee support group. The adopted teen support group, the adoptive parent support group, and the birth parent support group are on hold until enough individuals are interested in participating in a monthly adoption support group. If one of these groups interests you, please call Marie to be put on the waiting list for the adoption support group.
Support group members must live in the Capital Region since meetings are held at Marie’s office in Albany, NY. There is a fee to attend the support group. To ensure the support group is comprised of individuals who would be a good fit, all potential group members must be interviewed before attending the adoption support group to discuss their personal situation and, how adoption support groups work. For the adopted teen support group, parents of adopted teens must call Marie. Support group attendance is not allowed without a positive interview. To learn more about the support groups, call Marie at 518-281-8884.
