Adoption Support Groups

Home Adoption Support Groups

Knowing that being an adoptee, birth parent, or adoptive parent can be a very isolating and frequently misunderstood life experience, Marie leads adoption support groups for adoption triad members. Being in a group of individuals with similar experiences helps individuals have a safe place to discuss the core issues of adoption, trauma, and complex relationships. With these shared experiences, relationships can be experienced in a new way, and healing can occur in a manner that is different from individual therapy. Common topics of adoption support groups include: adoption search and reunion, relinquishment trauma, education on adoption issues, and, insensitive adoption comments.

At this time, the only active group is the adult adoptee support group. The adopted teen support group, the adoptive parent support group, and the birth parent support group are on hold until enough individuals are interested in participating in a monthly adoption support group. If one of these groups interests you, please call Marie to be put on the waiting list for the adoption support group.

Support group members must live in the Capital Region since meetings are held at Marie’s office in Albany, NY. There is a fee to attend the support group. To ensure the support group is comprised of individuals who would be a good fit, all potential group members must be interviewed before attending the adoption support group to discuss their personal situation and, how adoption support groups work. For the adopted teen support group, parents of adopted teens must call Marie. Support group attendance is not allowed without a positive interview. To learn more about the support groups, call Marie at 518-281-8884.

Adoption support groups are different from therapy groups in that group members do not need to share their personal information before they are ready to or require monthly attendance. While there would be no commitment to attend the adoption support group every month, support groups reach their fullest potential when trust is established, which only comes with regular attendance.

Adult Adoptee Support Group

The adult adoptee support group provides a unique place for adopted persons to share what it is like to be adopted. Group members often comment that it feels good to share their experiences with someone who understands the complexities of being adopted. Frequent topics of the adult adoptee support group include loss, identity, loyalty, rejection, and guilt/shame. Relinquishment trauma, the reunion experience, and how to have difficult conversations with family members are also topics of the group’s discussion. The adult adoptee support group meets on the first Thursday of the month. If you are interested in the adult adoptee support group, please call Marie at 518-281-8884.

Teen Adoptee Support Group

The Adopted Teen Support is on hold until there are enough teens interested in the support group to resume meetings. The adopted teen support group meets once a month in the evenings. The support group is open to adopted teens ages 13-18 years. Common adoption issue topics of the group include adoption bullying, identity, adoption loss, feeling different from adoptive parents, birth parents, and adoption reunions. Marie leads the group discussion to help the teens find insight, guidance on problem-solving, and education on adoption issues. Parents of teens should call for information on the teen group prior to their teen attending their first support group meeting to learn if the adopted teen support group would be a good match for their teen.
