Mental Health Issues of Adoptees: What Clinicians Need to Know to Meet the Needs of Their Adopted Clients
The Mental Health Issues of Adoptees training is a comprehensive clinical look at the issues adoptees bring to therapy. The training includes a review of pre-and post-adoption risk factors and protective factors in the adoptive family. Relinquishment trauma will be presented as a key factor in the mental health issues of adoptees. Adoption traumas of late discovery adoptees, adoptees being raised “as if” born into a family, and racial trauma experienced by transracially adopted adoptees as significant impactors on an adopted person’s mental health are included in the presentation. With a thorough understanding of the complexity of mental health issues of adoptees, attendees will be able to do an adoption sensitive assessment. The training concludes with a review of therapy techniques and interventions that may help adopted persons.
